XXI CONGRESS OF UKRAINIAN CANADIANS

October 1-3, 2004
The XXI Triennial Congress of Ukrainian Canadians, held on October 1-3, 2004 in Winnipeg Manitoba emphasized the importance of communication as an integral part of, and a vital tool, in all areas addressed by UCC.

During the course of the 21st Congress, under the banner "MOVING CONFIDENTLY INTO THE FUTURE", delegates and members of the Ukrainian Canadian community had the opportunity of participating in a series of roundtable discussions on current topics of interest. These included: Government Relations; Canada-Ukraine; Education; Justice Issues; Branches and Provincial Councils - Leadership for Tomorrow; Trafficking in Women; Welcoming the 4th Wave of Immigration from Ukraine. Resolutions that will assure appropriate attention to the aforementioned topics were unanimously endorsed. One of the key issues for the newly elected Board will be the continued pursuance of redress for injustices done to Ukrainians and other Europeans during Canada's first internment operations of 1914-1920.

The delegation was also presented with a VISION QUEST report as mandated by the XXth Congress. The report provided a synthesis of information gathered from three sources: the XXth Congress; Focus groups held in key cities across Canada, and a survey. A resolution was passed accepting the report and recommending that the community dialogue on our shared vision of the future be an ongoing process, and a benchmark for the work plan. It is notable that of the twelve identified areas in the report, three key issues which received most of the comments were: Communication, Youth and Education.

"The Ukrainian Canadian community represented at the Congress enthusiastically participated in the deliberations, both during the Roundtable Discussions and the Vision Quest session resulting in excellent resolutions, which will serve as the catalyst in assuring that the Ukrainian Canadian community will indeed move confidently into the future", stated newly elected UCC President, Orysia Sushko, who is eagerly looking forward to the challenges of the coming term of office.
